terms of service

last updated: may 2026 · the short, honest version

i'm not a lawyer and you're not a corporation, so let's not pretend. these are the ground rules for using backbencher. they're short on purpose — be cool, use it for your own lectures, and we'll get along fine.

the deal

backbencher is a chrome extension that helps you understand echo360 lectures. by using it, you agree to these terms. if you don't agree, don't use it. that's genuinely it.

your account

sign in with google. one human, one account. don't share your login with your whole tutorial group, and don't try to spin up burner accounts to farm free credits — i can see it, and it makes my postgres bill sad.

what you can do

use it for your own lectures. that's the whole point.

don't scrape it, don't resell access to it, don't reverse engineer it to ship a worse version. if you find a bug, email hello@navindu.me — i'll probably send you free credits.

payments + credits

backbencher runs on a credit system — 1 credit unlocks one lecture (chat, flashcards, outline, all of it). you get a small number of free credits when you sign up.

free credits expire after a set period. credits you buy or earn through referrals don't expire while your account is active.

top-ups are processed by stripe and are non-refundable except where the law says otherwise (which, fair). if you delete your account, any remaining credits go with it.

the ai bit

the answers come from third-party AI providers. they're a study aid, not a textbook. don't rely on them for anything important without checking the actual lecture. i can't guarantee accuracy and i won't pretend i can.

academic integrity

backbencher is a learning tool — use it to understand your lectures, not to skip doing the work yourself.

submitting AI-generated responses as your own original work is academic misconduct. your university's academic integrity policy still applies, no matter what tool you used. if you're unsure whether a particular use is okay, check with your institution before submitting.

this is on you, not me — but i'd rather be upfront about it than pretend the question doesn't exist.

uptime + changes

this is a solo project, built between assignments. i'll do my best, but stuff will occasionally break.

i might change features, adjust pricing, or shut the whole thing down if life happens. i'll give reasonable notice by email before anything dramatic.

ending things

you can delete your account anytime — email me and it's gone within 7 days.

i can suspend accounts that abuse the service (scraping, fraud, harassment, you know the vibe). credit balances are forfeited on suspension for abuse. don't be that person and we'll never have to do this.

the legal minimum

the service is provided "as is". to the extent allowed by law, i'm not liable for indirect or consequential damages from using backbencher. these terms are governed by australian law — that's where the database lives and where i mostly am.
